Guidelines for abbreviation and acronyms
- Avoid using abbreviations or acronyms. If abbreviations or acronyms are absolutely necessary, always spell out the first mention followed by the abbreviation or acronym in parentheses.
- Example:
- The Secretary of State attended the winter meeting of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS). NASS meets twice a year.
- Example:
- Do not abbreviate Secretary of State as SOS.
- Avoid using periods in acronyms, except for post office.
- Acronyms that are proper nouns should be used without the in front.
- Example:
- Correct: DMV will forward the information.
- Incorrect: The DMV will forward the information.
