The California Grizzly Bear is the State Animal, and it appears on the state’s flag and seal. As settlers poured into California during the Gold Rush, the population of grizzly bears dwindled. Human settlements encroached on the bears’ territory, and in 1922 the last California Grizzly Bear was shot and killed.
