This series is one of the most interesting groups from the enormous Public Works–Highways (Transportation) collection. Photographs depict various stages of highway and road construction projects including bridges, construction workers and equipment, rural roadside structures, mule and horse drawn equipment, road camps, convict labor, rock quarrying, flood damage, and scenic highways. Specific subjects of interest include Folsom Prison quarry operations, Wells Fargo Station and Trading Post at Timbuctoo (Yuba Co.), opening ceremonies at "The Rocks" (now Pinnacles National Monument, San Benito Co., 1932), construction of the Yolo Trestle (Yolo Co., 1914–1916), plank roads in the desert (Imperial Co., 1916), African American laborers (F3778:2998, 3005–3007), an demonstration highway at the State Fair (Sacramento Co., 1916), and, a U.S. military camp on the Mexican Border (1914, F3778:3017).
