California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., Issues Statement on the Passing of Civil Rights Icon Reverend James Lawson
Sacramento, Calif. – California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., today issued the following statement on the passing of Civil Rights Icon Reverend James Lawson:
“I offer heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of civil rights icon Reverend James Lawson, whose life and work were dedicated to nonviolent direct action, educating others, and peaceful justice for all.
His passing occurs as we approach the 60th anniversary of Freedom Summer and Reverend Lawson played a key role in preparing civil rights leaders, including the Freedom Riders, to peacefully handle the backlash of challenging racist laws and policies.
One way to honor his legacy is to continue it by registering to vote and voting in our local and national elections, so our voices are heard and become part of the decisions made about our lives and communities.
May Reverend Lawson’s legacy serve as a reminder of the importance of an inclusive democracy. And may he eternally rest in peace.”
