State Archives Launches Virtual Legislative LGBTQ Caucus Exhibit
SACRAMENTO, CA – In recognition of Pride month, The California State Archives in partnership with The California Legislative Lesbian, Gay Bisexual Transgender and Queer Caucus is launching the Legislative LGBTQ Caucus Google Exhibit.
“We are pleased to share the history of the California LGBTQ Legislative Caucus as we celebrate Pride Month,” said California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D. “The LGBTQ+ community is integral to the history of the state, and we are proud to highlight the work of the California LGBTQ Legislative Caucus as a driving force for promoting equality and inclusion in California.”
This online multimedia installation uses text, photographic and video documentation to highlight the early days of the Caucus’s struggles for LGBTQ+ equality, including their work on policies advancing the establishment of domestic partnerships, positive representation in school curricula and legal recognition of same-sex marriages. Many of the records included in the exhibit are part of the Caucus’ records which will be transferred to the State Archives for long-term preservation.
“It is impossible to tell the story of California without recognizing the cultural and civic contributions of the LGBTQ+ community, and we would like to express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Shirley Weber and her staff at the Secretary of State’s Office for launching the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus Exhibit,” said Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley) and Senator Susan Talamantes Eggman (D-Stockton), who respectively serve as Chair and Vice Chair of the Caucus. “As we continue the fight to expand civil rights and create true equality for the LGBTQ+ community in California, we remember our struggles in an effort to avoid seeing history repeat itself. This Archive will allow us to honor our achievements and serve as a reminder that the path to progress is never easy but vitally important.”
