Secretary of State Alex Padilla and Oakland Public Library Announce Partnership to Improve Youth Civic Engagement
OAKLAND – California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and the Oakland Public Library announced a partnership geared towards preparing young people to become active voters. Through the partnership, the Secretary’s office will provide collateral to the library’s 18 locations and the library will provide resources for students such as computer terminals for online pre-registration or voter registration opportunities. Oakland Public Library will also share PSAs on social media encouraging voter registration and civic engagement.
“Our local libraries can play a vital role in improving civic engagement,” said Secretary of State Alex Padilla. “I am proud to work with the Oakland Public Library to provide East Bay teens the tools they need to become active voters once they turn 18. Informational materials and access to computer terminals for pre-registration will help young people take that important first step to casting a ballot.”
“The Oakland Public Library is proud to join Secretary of State Padilla on his mission of registering and pre-registering students to vote. We believe developing active participants in the democratic process by providing information on voter registration and local, state and national elections leads to more inclusive and informed communities.”
This is the latest partnership in the Secretary of State’s nonpartisan Democracy at Work 2018 initiative. Through Democracy at Work, the Secretary of State’s office partners with the business community, local governments, and nonprofit sector employers to promote voter registration and civic engagement to employees and customers ahead of the 2018 elections.
Interested organizations can sign up to partner with the Secretary of State’s office through the newly redesigned DemocracyAtWork.sos.ca.gov web portal and utilize the online toolkit with sample email messages to staff as well as draft social media posts for customers. The Secretary of State’s Outreach Division can also design customized plans for interested partners.
