California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to Announce Major Milestone in California Pre-registration Totals, Unveil New High School Civic Engagement Portal

LOS ANGELES – California Secretary of State Alex Padilla will be joined by students, education leaders and school administrators to announce a major milestone reached in California’s voter pre-registration efforts of 16- and 17-year-olds. He will also unveil a new high school and youth initiatives portal on the Secretary of State’s website.

California launched online pre-registration for 16- and 17- year-olds in September 2016. In March, Secretary Padilla announced that a total of 88,700 16- and 17-year-olds have pre-registered to vote in California since the program launched in September 2016. California’s 16- and 17-year-olds can pre-register to vote online at registertovote.ca.gov. Their registration is activated when they turn 18.

The Secretary of State’s office has seen a spike in pre-registrations since youth began mobilizing after the Parkland School shooting and the March for Our Lives rallies.
