Secretary of State Alex Padilla to Make Inland Visit to John W. North High School During High School Voter Education Weeks
RIVERSIDE – Secretary of State Alex Padilla will visit Riverside Unified School District’s John W. North High School as part of High School Voter Education Weeks (April 17 – 28).
Secretary Padilla will be joined by local leaders to discuss the importance of voting and the role young people can play in shaping the future through civic participation. Secretary Padilla and the Riverside County Registrar of Voters will register students to vote. Voter registration opportunities are especially timely for students turning 18 ahead of the June 6 Riverside General Municipal Elections.
Secretary Padilla recently announced that eligible 16- and 17-year-olds could pre-register to vote online. By pre-registering, California youth will have their voter registration become active automatically when they turn 18.
The California Education Code designates the last two full weeks in April and September to be High School Voter Education Weeks. This provides an opportunity for high schools and their students to partner with elections officials to promote civic education and participation on campus and foster an environment that cultivates lifelong voters and active citizens.
