Secretary of State Alex Padilla Kicks Off High School Voter Education Weeks at Sylmar High School
LOS ANGELES – Secretary of State Alex Padilla kicks off High School Voter Education Weeks (April 17 – 28) with a visit to Sylmar Charter High School.
Secretary Padilla will discuss the importance of voting and the role young people can play in shaping the future through civic participation. Secretary Padilla, the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s Office, Power 106, and LA Youth Vote will help students register and pre-register to vote. Voter registration opportunities are especially timely for students turning 18 ahead of the May 16 Los Angeles City Council District 7 and Los Angeles School Board District 6 runoff elections. Sylmar High School is in LA City Council District 7 and LA School Board District 6.
Secretary Padilla recently announced that eligible 16- and 17-year-olds could pre-register to vote online. By pre-registering, California youth will have their voter registration become active automatically when they turn 18.
The California Education Code designates the last two full weeks in April and September to be High School Voter Education Weeks. This provides an opportunity for high schools and their students to partner with elections officials to promote civic education and participation on campus and foster an environment that cultivates lifelong voters and active citizens.
