California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to Speak in Support of Bills Creating an Earlier CA Primary and Protecting Victims of Human Trafficking

SACRAMENTO - Secretary of State Alex Padilla will testify at two California State Senate committee hearings on Tuesday, April 18.

Secretary Padilla will testify in the State Senate Elections and Constitutional Amendments Committee in support of SB 568. The goal of this bill, authored by Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens), is to move California’s presidential primary election to third after Iowa and New Hampshire. Specifically, SB 568 calls for the California presidential primary to be held on the third Tuesday in March and authorizes the Governor to move it even earlier if other states move up their primary elections.

Secretary Padilla will also testify in the State Senate Judiciary Committee in support of SB 597. This bill, authored by Senator Connie Leyva (D-Chino) would make victims of human trafficking eligible for the state’s Safe at Home confidential address program. The program, which provides a free post office box and mail forwarding service, is designed to help victims and survivors of domestic violence, stalking or sexual assault to start new lives in peace and to provide added protections to their overall safety plans.
