MEDIA ADVISORY:

Secretary of State Alex Padilla to Announce Partnership with California State University System to Improve Student Voter Registration

Secretary of State Alex Padilla will deliver a presentation to the California State University Board of Trustee’s meeting at CSU Long Beach on Tuesday September 20, 2016. At this meeting, Secretary Padilla will discuss a new partnership with the California State University system to increase student voter registration and turnout at its campuses across the state.

In 2014 only 8% of eligible youth aged 18-24 voted in the general election and only 52% of eligible youth were even registered to vote, which is more than 20 points below any other age group. The California Students Vote Project, a public-private effort led by the California Secretary of State’s office, seeks to change this.

*The California Students Vote Project is led by the California Secretary of State’s office in partnership with the California Lieutenant Governor’s office, and three nonprofit organizations; CalPIRG, California Common Cause, and Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus
