Over 500 Schools Participate in California Student Mock Election

SACRAMENTO –523 schools cast 208,119 ballots in California’s Student Mock Election.

This week, California students participating in the Mock Election “voted” for US President, US Senate, and several of the Propositions that will be on the November General Election ballot. The Secretary of State’s office provided schools mock election ballots, voter information guides, and posters to promote voting.

“Providing students an opportunity to research candidates, discuss ballot propositions, and cast mock ballots is a great way to teach them about voting,” Secretary of State Padilla said. “Familiarizing young people with the democratic process will make them much more likely to become active voters once they turn 18-years-old. I thank all of the teachers who built the mock election into their lesson plans. Working with educators and local elections officials we can ensure that the next generation of Californians are civically engaged.”
