More Than 18 million Californians Now Registered to Vote
Secretary of State Padilla Releases First Report of Voter Registration for November 8 General Election
SACRAMENTO – California Secretary of State Alex Padilla today released the first voter registration report for the November 8, 2016 General Election. The report is a compilation of voter registration numbers reported by California’s 58 county elections offices. The report reflects registration data as of July 7, 2016.
The report shows that 18,084,999 Californians are currently registered to vote—this is the second highest statewide voter registration total ever. As of July 7, 72.89% of eligible California citizens we’re registered to vote.
“More than 18 million California citizens are now registered to vote,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla said. “I expect registration numbers will continue to grow as we approach the registration deadline of October 24. Eligible California citizens can register for the first time or update their registration online at registertovote.ca.gov. If you know a friend or family member who needs to register or update their registration information, encourage them to do so at registertovote.ca.gov. Californians can register online from their home or mobile devices.”
Key Statistics:
- 8,155,831 California voters are registered Democrats—the most ever recorded in an official report of registration.
Between January 5, 2016 and July 7, 2016:
- Net Democratic registration increased 717,176.
- Democratic registration as a share of the total electorate increased 2 percentage points.
- Net Republican registration increased 131,130.
- Republican registration as a share of the total electorate decreased 0.5 percentage points.
- Net No Party Preference registration increased 70,624.
- No Party Preference registration as a share of the total electorate decreased 0.7 percentage points.
