MEDIA ADVISORY
California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to discuss Voter Registration Advances at National Conference
California Secretary of State Alex Padilla will discuss advances in voter registration at the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) conference in Washington DC tomorrow. Padilla will participate on a panel, titled: “The Force Awakens 2016: Sequels to State Voter Registration Advances and the Return of Third-Party Registration Groups”. The panel will also feature Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman and West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant. David Becker, Director of Election Initiatives with the Pew Charitable Trusts will moderate.
In 2015, Secretary Padilla sponsored California’s New Motor Voter Act. When fully implemented all eligible California citizens who visit the DMV to apply for, renew, or change their address on a driver’s license or state ID will be registered to vote unless they opt out. Yesterday, President Obama called for similar automatic voter registration proposals to be adopted nationwide.
