Attention History Buffs: Secretary of State
Bowen Launches California History Writing Contest

SACRAMENTO - Secretary of State Debra Bowen today invited school-age children to write essays or poems about their experiences using the State Archives or other historical archives and places to learn more about California. The contest seeks stories about the most interesting discoveries in these places that can make history come alive in unique ways.

"Every place in California has some history behind it. I love hearing what people take away from a visit to the State Archives, the Capitol, Sutter’s Fort, and hundreds of other great sites,"; said Secretary Bowen, the custodian of the California State Archives. "When students go beyond the classroom and dig into fascinating topics of the past, they never look at the present the same way again."

Contest entries must be emailed or postmarked by March 28. Winners will be notified by April 7 and selected entries will be published in the State Archives "California Originals" newsletter on the Secretary of State’s website.

Contest details and the official entry form are at www.sos.ca.gov/archives/pdf/archives-writing-contest.pdf.
